John 17:1-4
A Father's Prayer for His Children
John 17:1

These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven,
and said, Father, the hour is come;
glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:

Jesus Christ was in the garden beginning His prayer that he knew was going to lead Him into the events that was going to kill him.

For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin;
that we might be made the righteousness of God in him
II Cor 5:21
And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself,
and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
Philippians 2:8.
As many were astonied at thee;
his visage was so marred more than any man,
and his form more than the sons of men...
Isaiah 52:14.

As for us fathers, there will also come a time in our life when we will DIE!  If we are fortunate enough to have the time to 'look back' at our life, we will be able to see how we did as a father to our children.  Will we be disappointed or will be know that we did all that we could?  Will we be 'glorified' as a parent from our children?  Will God get the final glory from the raising of our children to serve him?...  or serve themselves?...  or to serve the world?

The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice:
and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.
Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.
Proverbs 23:24,25

A wise son maketh a glad father...
Proverbs 15:20a

Children's children are the crown of old men;
and the glory of children are their fathers.
Proverbs 17:6
OR
Whoso curseth his father or his mother,
his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.
Proverbs 20:20

A foolish son is a grief to his father,
and bitterness to her that bare him.
Proverbs 17:25

A foolish son is the calamity of his father...
Proverbs 19:13

By the time we die, most of us fathers will have watched our children grow up and so we will have a pretty good idea of how we did as a parent.  Naturally, if we compare our own children to the world, we will probably figure our children are doing well if they didn't go queer, didn't turn out to be a criminal, they have a job and family & are still with their first wife and come and visit us once in a while in the nursing home.

But when we compare our children's growth and present life to Biblical standards, we can see better how their relationship (if they have one) is with Jesus Christ.  We then will have a true awareness as to how we did as a parent.  After all, our children did belong to God at one time (Romans 4:8; 5:13)!  Did we make sure they maintained that family 'membership' when the time came (Romans 7:9)?  Did we train them to listen to their FATHER as they grew up so when eventually took those famous first steps out into the world, they were still listening to GOD the FATHER?

Will God say to us fathers and grandfathers ...Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. Matthew 25:23

(see John 17 Introduction for God's words regarding children)

John 17:2,3
As thou hast given him power over all flesh,
that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.
And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God,
and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
A child grows from a helpless condition (baby) to a semi-helpless condition (young child) to a seemingly total helpless condition (teenager) and eventually to a condition where they want to get out into the world and 'get a life' and then finally, they are actually ready (sort of, anyway) to get out into the world.

In that process, parents are accountable for the actions of that child until the child is considered understanding enough to be held accountable on their own.   In the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom is found: but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding  Proverbs 10:13.  Naturally, that is a gradual process and is in effect, applicable at various times of the child's growth.

Beyond the physical & mental growth stages of a child, the spiritual stages of a child are in the hands of the parents as well.  The goal, as verse 3 states, is that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sentIt would be a shame, amen, to raise our kids to be a 'great kid', a star in school, to get a good job and career and yet, by our actions and testimony, to teach them to ignore the Book - or to 'dump the stuff' as soon as they left home, etc.

For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?
Matt 16:26
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world,
and lose his own soul?
Mark 8:36
For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world,
and lose himself, or be cast away?
Luke 9:25
For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world
through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ,
they are again entangled therein, and overcome,
the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.
II Peter2:20

John 17:4a
I have glorified thee on the earth:
As a father, have we obeyed the simple verses that tell us to give God the glory each and every day?  Did our kids see that all take place?  Was it real?  Or did you just 'clean up your act' when the pastor was around?
I Corinthians 10:31 Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.             ALL?
I Corinthians 11:7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.      Does our appearance give God truthful glory?
Galatians 6:14 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.   Did you and the world 'get along'?
Philippians 4:19 But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.                       Do your children know that, or did YOU provide?
I Timothy 1:17 Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
And in the tough times, too!
I Peter 4:14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.
Romans 8:28   And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Romans 8:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
Romans 8:18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
John 17:4b
I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.
Just before we die...
Wouldn't it have been great if God would have given us enough time in our life to do
for Him what HE wanted us to do?
Wouldn't it have been great if we had known what it was God had for us to do in this life?
Wouldn't it have been great if we had done what God wanted us to do in this life?
Wouldn't it have been great if we had done ALL what God had wanted us to do in this life?

What a waste of a life - to have lived all those years making money, working hard, sacrificing all that parents sacrifice, only to find out it was all a waste.
What a waste of life - to have lived all those years and find an empty Judgment Seat - very little, if any, rewards, crowns, etc. Nothing!
What a waste of life - to have done so much good for others, to have given money to so many people, to have helped out so many people in their times of need, to have been a comfort to so many hurting people, to have been a teacher to hundreds of people in your lifetime, to have heard about God and Jesus Christ and the Word of God - only to find out that you did not know Jesus Christ as your Saviour.

For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world,
and lose his own soul?
Mark 8:36
Many will say to me in that day,
Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name?
and in thy name have cast out devils?
and in thy name done many wonderful works?
And then will I profess unto them,
I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
Matt 7:22,23
For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.
Romans 10:3

Yup - what a shame!
