- Acts 2:38 -
A Return to the Days of Yesterchurch
(among other things!)
Almost everyone claims Acts 2:38 for their life verse today!
Really!!! Almost every church denomination, etc. claims this verse for their salvation verse!
Then Peter said unto them,
Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins,
and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

I.  Let's see how a Greek Speak scholar looks at Acts 2:38
see the powerpoint presentation. to help you 'see' how a Greek scholar/pastor/preacher deals with this verse by turning to "the Greek." See the Scriptural warning within this presentation towards those preachers who use the Greek, etc..

II.  Now let's look at the context of the entire verse:  37-40!
Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.  For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.  And with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, Save yourselves from this untoward generation.

III.  Let's look within the verse itself... the word "Remission."

Remission is not salvation!

"Because of ..." not "in order to..."

    A.  Mark 1:4  -  John preached it - because of it...  (Also see Acts 19:3-5)

    B.  Matthew 26:28  -  Jesus shed his blood because of it...  (He was the Messiah - it was all for the Jews...)
bulls and goats, etc.  Hebrews 9:13   -    "many" is referring to Paradise...

    C.  Romans 3:25  -  Paul preached it when he was talking about Christ's purpose as a propitiation...
(just as Romans 5:8 doesn't mean Christ died 'in order' that we can sin...)

IV.  But let's go even further and look into the text of the chapter - and at the rest of Acts!

Chapter two - filled with 'issues!'

Baptismal Regeneration
Speaking in Tongues
Jews verses Gentiles - who is "to" to, etc.
Christ in Hell
Apostolic Succession Dies (Signs & wonders from Moses (Exodus) to Jesus Christ (Deut 18:15-20) to Apostles (Mk 16; II Cor 12:12 - ends when Jews are shelved!)
Calvinism
Post Millennialism
Amillennialism
Pains of death
Last Days almost started - Joel 2:28-32 (not fulfilled, but almost)
Early Church (beginnings)

Today's Marketed Church process is taking everyone back to the early church as a set-up for the antichrist!  (even Bible Believers will be ready to see signs and wonders - coming soon in a church near you!)

Keep in mind that in Chapter two:
1.  No Christians are present!
2.  No one prayed for the 'gift of tongues' and those who received it were only the eleven - not the 120, etc.!
3.  No 'unknown tongues!' - they all knew it was another person's own language...!
4.  No "intitial evidence" anywhere!
5.  Nobody preached about Christ dying for their 'sins' in regard to their personal salvation from Hell to Heaven, etc.!
6.  Salvation is from a wicked froward generation - themselves - Israel - they killed their Messiah!
7.  None of the apostles were ever baptized according to Acts 2:38!

The final process of setting up God's earthly kingdom could have started in Acts 2!
Christ is getting his prayer answered from Luke 23:34!
They are getting another chance - they can be forgiven if they would be willing!

Take your choice...
Acts 2:38 does give those baptized the Holy Ghost - it does! That cannot be denied!  But unless one knows the gospel of Paul for the church age, one would go nuts in the Book of Acts.  You can build a church on a number of 'ways!'

Acts 8:12-17   But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.  Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.  Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:  Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:  (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)  Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.

Acts 8:35-38  Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.  And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?  And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.  And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

Acts 9:17,18  And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.  And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized.

Acts 10:44-48  While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.  And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.  For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,  Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?  And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.

Acts 16:31  And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

Acts 19:3-6  And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism. Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.  When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.  And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.

Acts 22:16   And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

And if you want earlier examples from the 'embryonic' church:

Acts 2:21  And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Acts 2:47  Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

Acts 3:19  Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;

Acts 4:4   Howbeit many of them which heard the word believed; and the number of the men was about five thousand.

Acts 4:12  Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Acts 4:31-33  And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.  And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.  And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.

Acts 5:12-14  And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch. And of the rest durst no man join himself to them: but the people magnified them.  And believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women.)  Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them.

Acts 6:8 to 7:60 - whoops, that sermon backfired on the preacher!

What a mess, eh!

You can't get any solid doctrine out of Acts - but you see how the church came about as the Jews rejected Christ! Read Romans 11 for God's explanation!

God's Pattern for Departure from the Jews TO the Gentiles!
Acts 9:15 - Paul's calling to the Gentiles! Romans 11:13; Galatians 1:11,12; Acts 9:15,16 (will suffer for Christ's name sake)

Acts 13:44-48  And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.  But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming.  Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles. For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth. And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed.

Acts 18:6   And when they opposed themselves, and blasphemed, he shook his raiment, and said unto them, Your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean: from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles.

Acts 28:28 - The Salvation of God is now preached to the Gentiles!

In fact, within Acts, the Gentiles were mentioned a number of times throughout early Acts:

10:45 - And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
11:1 - And the apostles and brethren that were in Judaea heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of God.
11:18 - When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.
14:27 - And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles.
15:3 - And being brought on their way by the church, they passed through Phenice and Samaria, declaring the conversion of the Gentiles: and they caused great joy unto all the brethren.
15:7-9 -  And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe. And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.
22:21 - And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles.
26:17 - Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, (Paul's Testimony)

In fact, in fact, the Gentiles even received miracles signs and wonders, etc.  (remember, Jews required such...)
10:45,46 -  And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.  For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
15:12 - Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them.
21:19 - And when he had saluted them, he declared particularly what things God had wrought among the Gentiles by his ministry.

Today!
Ephesians 1:13
In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise...

1)  Realize that you are a sinner!
Isaiah 64:6  But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

2)  Realize that the penalty of that sin is death!
John 3:36  He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
Romans 6:23  For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Romans 5:12  Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
Ezekiel 18:4b  ...the soul that sinneth, it shall die.
John 8:24  I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
Revelation 20:14,15  And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.  And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

3)  Realize that you can not save yourself!
Titus 3:5,6  Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;  Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
Romans 3:20  Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
Ephesians 2:8,9  For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:  Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Galatians 2:16  Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.

4)  Accept what Christ did for you!
Romans 5:8  But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
John 14:6  Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
I Timothy 2:5,6   For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;
II Corinthians 5:21  For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.  Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
I Peter 2:24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
Galatians 3:13  Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

5)  Realize and accept by faith IN Christ!
John 3:16  For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Galatians 3:26  For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
Romans 10:9,10  That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.  For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Romans 3:28  Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.
Romans 4:5   But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
John 3:18  He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
I Timothy 1:16  Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.

Don't get caught up with a false salvation based on Acts 2:38.
And beyond that, the latest warning is don't get caught up in a church
that is leading you back to the early church in Acts.
